How to Choose a Dildo for Beginners
You might not be 100% sure what to consider when trying to select your first dildo. Here are a few things to think about while comparing your options!
- Size – If you’ve never used a dildo before then you’ll probably want to start off with something smaller. However, if you already own a dildo (or you’re sure you can handle it) then a standard, six-inch dildo is always a good option!
- Material – Non-porous materials like silicone, metal, or glass are the safest options for body-safe dildos. Toys without internal electronics can be sterilized easily simply by dropping them into a pot of boiling water! Porous materials (such as TPE, PVC, or jelly) can’t be sterilized; they can only be cleaned. You’ll want to make sure to completely clean porous toys in-between uses, as these materials can harbor bacteria.
- Shape – You’ll be able to choose between straight and curved dildos. Curved models are better at g-spot targeting (they’re also called g-spot dildos), whereas straight dildos are best for training up to larger toys, large dildos (or large body parts).
- Design – There are plenty of designs to choose from! There realistic dildos for lifelike pleasure, non-phallic dildos for anyone who does not want a realistic feel. There are also colorful dildos and even rainbow dildos for a fun splash of color. You’ll have plenty of designs to choose from!
- Hard vs. Soft – Hard dildos work better during penetration since they can be easily angled. However, soft dildos feel more realistic to the touch. Dual-density dildos offer both advantages, being firm enough to be easily inserted but soft enough to feel realistic.
- Use – For vaginal use, any dildo will do. However, if you’re planning on using your new dildo as an anal dildo then having a flared base (or a dildo with a handle) is a must (the flared base will prevent over-insertion)!
- Features – Even with beginner dildos, you might be able to get a few extra features for your toy! Suction cup dildos, harnesses for pegging strap-ons, and vibrating dildos are all features you can consider.
What Size Dildo is Best for a Beginner?
It really depends on what you’re planning on using it for! If you’re planning on using it vaginally then we’d recommend starting with a dildo between 4 to 5.1 inches in length, with a girth of 1.5 inches or less. For anal, the measurements are a bit more conservative. We’d say shoot for 3 to 5 inches in length with a maximum girth of 1.59 (although we’d suggest closer to an inch!). Check out this full guide on dildo sizes for more info!

Cheapest BASICS Suction Cup Dildo 6 Inch
Designed to hit all the right spots, this dildo’s thick, sloping head and shaft covered in pronounced veins make it the perfect toy for those looking for a realistic texture. Use solo or with a partner, even with a harness! Were it not for the material, this could be one of the best dildos for beginners that aren’t looking to make a huge investment.
Pros
- ✅ Great price
- ✅ Perfect for G-spot stimulation
- ✅ Slightly curved to hit all the right spots
- ✅ Pronounced veins for texture play
Cons
- ❌ Suction cup isn't very strong
- ❌ Material can be quite firm
- ❌ Quite a thick shaft for beginners
- ❌ Material is porous
Verdict
While this toy is a cheap suction cup dildo, it comes with a price. The best dildos for beginners are going to be made of silicone. The PVC material this toy is made of is, while phthalate- free, not entirely body safe. The porous material is far more likely than silicone to harbour things that can make you sick.

Ridges Tantus Charmer Silicone G-Spot and P-Spot Dildo 6 Inch
This uniquely ridged dildo is one of the best starter silicone dildos out there. While the size may look intimidating, the four nodules along the shaft allow for smooth penetration and mind-blowing orgasms. This toy is designed with p-spot and g-spot stimulation in mind, making it one of the best dildos for beginners. Try pairing with a harness for extra fun!
Pros

The Tantus Charmer is a high-quality toy with a thoughtful design. This dildo pairs perfectly with a harness for strap-on or pegging play – but it is worth noting that the ridged design makes the toy extremely bendable and difficult to control for solo play.

Cons
- ❌ Material is porous

Another toy lost to PVC. While the price is excellent, the material is potentially body-unsafe and therefore should be generally avoided. If you do go for this toy, make sure you use a condom over it to limit skin contact and clean thoroughly afterwards!

Soft Lovehoney Super Soft Silicone Galaxy Dildo 7 Inch
Need a little space? The LoveHoney Super Soft Silicone Galaxy Dildo has got your back. Perfect for solo or harness play, this dildo is simply designed, with ultra-smooth, body-safe silicone and a strong suction cup for hands-free play. The six inches of insertable length are ideal for someone looking for less than the average dildo to take on.
Pros
- ✅ Super-soft texture
- ✅ Ideal beginners length
- ✅ Strong suction cup
- ✅ Head hits all the right places
Cons
- ❌ Lack of colour options
- ❌ Base a little wide
- ❌ Difficult for anal play
Verdict
This is possibly the best first dildo on the market. The texture is especially soft (perfect for beginners), and the suction cup is all it promises to be. The price isn’t bad either! It’s ideal for g-spot stimulation, so those looking for prostate stimulation may find it a little girthy and uncomfortable when inserted in the anus.

Cons
- ❌ Material is not body safe
- ❌ Details can make the toy rough

Verdict
For a toy that boasts a totally lifelike experience, there could be a wider range of skin tones available. That being said, the Lifelike Lover Classic Realistic Dildo is the best type of dildo for those looking to simulate the real thing – but be careful of the soft plastic (likely PVC) material, it may not be completely body safe.

Flexible Fun Factory Limba Flex M
The Fun Factory Limba Flex M is a flexible dildo that is fully posable and bends to suit your needs. The wire inside allows you to bend the silicone dildo to properly target your p-spot or g-spot easily and comfortably.
This is also one of the best anal dildos for beginners because of the slim diameter and tapered tip. This really just shows how versatile the shape and size (and adjustability) of this dildo is. It’s perfect for allowing you to explore your unique self without having to shell out for a heap of differently shaped toys for different uses.
Pros
- ✅ Completely posable and adjustable
- ✅ Body safe materials
- ✅ Great for both solo play and partnered fun
- ✅ Easy to hold and control
- ✅ Tapered tip for easy insertion
- ✅ Suction cup base for hands-free fun
Cons
- ❌ Could be a little small for experienced users
- ❌ Dust and lint tends to stick to the surface
- ❌ More pricey
Verdict
This unique toy deserves a spot on any ‘best dildos for beginners’ list. I love all that the Fun Factory Limba Flex M has to offer. While it definitely is on the pricier side when it comes to beginner-dildos, I really think it’s worth splurging on! It offers a really cool poseable feature that allows you to customize your dildo experience – both for you and your partners, as well as vaginally and anally. I also really appreciate the 100% body-safe, non-porous material. The silicone dildo is easy to keep clean, is fully waterproof, and can easily be sterilized if you want to share it with your partner.
The modest girth and tapered tip also make this a great fit for anyone just looking to dip their toes into the world of flexible beginner dildos. Though the price is a little steep for beginners, it’s a worthy investment, especially if versatility is important for you!
Double Lovehoney Desire Luxury Strapless Strap-On
If you are after a great beginner-friendly strapless strap-on with a slim and tapered dildo attached to it, the Desire Luxury Strapless Strap-On is one of the best double dildos to explore. It boasts a double-headed design for sharing the fun as well as additional rabbit ears for the wearer to enjoy some clitoral stimulating during penetration. The dildo for insertion has a nicely tapered tip and a slim shaft.
The shaft itself is poseable so you can adjust the angles to your liking to make sure that penetration feels good for both parties and that the dildo stays in place. It’s waterproof, rechargeable, and comes with a luxurious leather storage bag with zippers than can be locked with a small padlock for complete privacy.
Pros
- ✅ Triple stimulation action
- ✅ Great size for both the wearer and receiver
- ✅ Strapless strap-on design
- ✅ Great for both solo play and partnered play
- ✅ Lockable storage bag included
Cons
- ❌ Rabbit ears are a little rigid
- ❌ Requires decent kegal strength
- ❌ Quite loud
- ❌ Control buttons could be better placed
Verdict
For anyone interested in pegging or strap-on play in general but doesn’t want an actual strap-on harness, this is a pretty good beginner’s item. Now I wouldn’t say that strapless strap-ons are inherently beginner-friendly because they do come with a bit of a learning curve. However, the shape and size of this product does make it accessible for beginners whoi are curious to try out such a versatile toy. It delivers strong vibrations in both ends, has additional rabbit ears for clitoral stimulation, and can be used both for solo play or with your partner. You’re definitely getting a lot of bang for your buck with this device! Not to mention to super cute and luxurious storage bag it comes with!
Fans of soft dildos may want to look elsewhere, but if you prefer a little more rigidity in your penetrative play, it may be just right for you. That’s not to say the material is rough: the soft silicone is smooth, comfortable and satisfying for both wearer and receiver. However, some online reviews share mixed experiences about how rigid the rabbit ears are. Consider what type of sensation you enjoy for clitoral stimulation before making a big purchase. Alternatively, there a plenty of other designs available in the world of double dildos and strapless strap-ons! Overall, I think this is a good quality, beginner-accessible double dildo that offers some deliciously storng vibrations!

Large King Cock Ultra Realistic Girthy Suction Cup Dildo 8.5 Inch
The super realistic King Cock is a wild ride. With a hand-detailed, lifelike shaft, this dildo is expertly crafted for super intense sensations. It’s harness-compatible, and has a strong suction cup for solo or couple adventures. Apply a layer of water-based lubricant to your King Cock before use to enjoy a comfortable and smooth insertion experience.
Pros
- ✅ Ultra-realistic
- ✅ Lifelike feel
- ✅ Hand-detailed
- ✅ Strong suction cup
Cons
- ❌ Doesn't include balls
- ❌ Poor range of skin tones
- ❌ PVC material is non-porous (not body safe)
Verdict
If you’re truly a beginner, this may not be the best dildo to use. The best dildos for beginners will have a less intimidating girth and length to ease you into the process. However, with plenty (and I mean plenty) of lube, and perhaps a partner with more experience, the King Cock Ultra Realistic Girthy Suction Cup Dildo has plenty of potential. It’s unfortunate that it only comes in three colours, as it’ll certainly detract from the realism if your partner has a completely different skin tone to the toy.

- ✅ Easy to clean
- ✅ High quality feel
- ✅ Lifeline veined design
Cons

This might not be the best dildos for beginners, all things considered. The size and girth are more suited for people more experienced with dildo play – however, if you are looking for something like the King Cock, this is the better option due to the body safe silicone.

Best Types of Dildos for Beginners
Not sure where to start? Below is a rundown of the best types of dildos for beginners!
Realistic
This is the best type of dildo for those looking to simulate the real experience. A high-quality, well-lubed toy can feel just like the real thing! While realistic dildos are often made of PVC or other plastics, you’re best sticking with a silicone toy, as these are far more body safe and will last much longer.
Non-Realistic
If the veiny shafts of realistic dildos turn you off, non-phallic dildos are right for you. Not confined to realism, this kind of dildo can come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. This is the type to go for if you’re looking for an ultra-smooth or non-realistic texture (ribbed, beaded, etc).
Anal
Technically, any dildo can be used anally. But many dildos are designed with anal in mind – these often will be a little shorter, more tapered, and have a wide, flared base to ensure safe extraction. If you’re eyeing up a dildo for anal, these qualities will ensure the most pleasurable experience.
Double
Double dildos can be used by any couple with any parts – or even solo! Double dildos with one, long shaft are most well-suited to partner play, no matter your penetration preference (anal, vaginal). Other dildos (like the one pictured) will have a curved/flexible shaft. These are more suited to solo play – though they can be used by couples – these are easier to lube up and squat over for a solo session.
Strapless Strapons
Strapless strap-ons with a shorter pony (insertable length worn by the ‘wearer’) are best for couples in which one or both have vaginas. The shorter pony is held in place by the wearer’s vagina, and used to penetrate as if a harness were there.
Choosing Between a Hard or Soft Dildo as Your Starter
It’s all about your comfort level, but if you’re having trouble making up your mind, here’s a few tips!
Hard
Hard doesn’t have to mean rough! If you’re looking at hard toys, you’re likely looking at a non-realistic, and/or smaller toy (not always!). This is because larger, hard toys with lots of detail DO end up being quite rough. Hard dildos are often easier to clean and harbour fewer harmful bacteria.
Soft
On the other hand, soft dildos hit just the spot if you’re after something realistic in aesthetic and texture. When you’re shopping for soft toys, make sure the material you’re looking at is body safe – many cheaper, soft toys will not be.
Should You Go For a Vibrator Instead?
If you’re a complete beginner to sex toys, it may feel difficult to pick between the two. It comes down to this. Which sensation do you enjoy the most? Penetration (insertion into the anus, mouth, or vagina), or vibration (internal or external)? It’s important to get to know the difference, especially if you’re on a budget and don’t want to shell out for both…
Dildo
Typically, dildos will be shaped like a penis, with the express purpose of penetration. With dildos, you get to play around with realism, non-realism, colours, shapes, sizes, etc. Some even vibrate! Dildos are all about wanting that feeling of fullness, so if that’s something you’re after (for instance, if you’ve enjoyed fingering), you’re in the right place.
Vibrator
Vibrators can come in all shapes and sizes (we list them all in our blog post about all the different types of vibrators you need to know about). The benefit to vibrators, however, is that they can provide external as well as internal stimulation. Vibrating dildos are typically referred to as such, whereas a bespoke vibrator is a vibrating toy with the express purpose of providing stimulation that way.
